How has Race been a part of your life?

Race was a very important aspect of my life growing up. I grew up being proud to be Black! I have an aunt who grew up around members of the Black Panther Party and she ALWAYS made sure that I knew that I was a BEAUTIFUL BLACK QUEEN and my siblings and cousins were KINGS. We didn’t have white Jesus hanging on the wall or white Santa bringing gifts during Christmas. My race was important and we always celebrated the cultural aspects of it. I didn’t grow up to dislike white people because my paternal side of my family is biracial. But, I’m very apprehensive around them.

How were you impacted by these experiences?

It made me highlight my culture daily with my children. I made it a point to let them now how wonderful our culture is. I kept them educated on the history of where we come from. They too grew up in a home that did not highlight white images of ppl or things that did not represent their culture.
